******************************************************
Which of these stories, folktales, and series have you read? And what greats are missing? Right off the bat, I didn't see a couple of Mark Twain classics, and then there are some contemporary books I'd add. I'll list those that I've read in the comments. You do the same.

Here are the one I've read in part:

Baum, L. Frank: The Wizard of Oz (and sequels)
Carroll, Lewis: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
Goldman, William: The Princess Bride
Kipling, Rudyard: Captains Courageous

As you can see, for a kid's fiction (YA) writer, I've got a lot of reading to catch up on.

I'd add a few, too, though.

Anderson, M.T.: Feed
Spinelli, Jerry: 1) Maniac Magee 2) Wringer 3) Stargirl 4) Crash (Loser and Milkweed are also very, very good)
Rockwell, Thomas: How to Eat Fried Worms
O'Dell, Scott: 1) The Black Pearl 2) Island of the Blue Dolphins
Other series worth looking at:
The Box Car Children by Gertrude Chandler Warner (although these may be a bit dated)
Park, Barbara: Junie B. Jones series
Sobol, Donald: Encylcopedia Brown books

There are so many more I've read and would like to list, but I'll stop here.

Hi! Got to your blog through Doug's. I like your post - my 8yo is just starting to read on his own. He loves stories and I have been reading to him since he was a baby. Thanks for your list. He is almost completing the whole range of Roald Dahl books (minus the adult ones). I am trying to figure out what next :)

The way I get him to read is to get him to read the first chapter, then he decides.

Wow that's a huge list.

I'm scared before I even start.

Dang Rich!

I hope you didn't type all that!

A really nice list... I have read quite a few, but I am overwhelmed with how many you have here.

Hey, Maeghan! It's great to have you. What have been your son's favorites so far? The list I put up is long but hardly all-inclusive. Serves as a good reminder for a lot of the stories I've forgotten about.

My 7 year old (1st grader) and especially my 5 year old (who basically lives in his own fantasy worlds half the time) have really just gotten into having stories read to them (by my wife and me). Probably started just after Christmas. She started them on The Spiderwick Chronicles, and they LOVED them. Couldn't wait each night to keep reading. Since I'm a huge Chronicles of Prydain buff, I followed up with The Book of Three, which we've finished. Now, every night before bedtime (and many nights even after bedtime), my five year old is bringing me The Black Cauldron and having me read to him. We're trying to get my older son to read for himself more and more, and he's doing some of that, but he'd still rather listen.

Once again, great to have you. Stick around.

codepoke,

It can't be that daunting. They're just children's books.

We do not have many selection of children books over here in the stores. Haven't really seen these books you've mentioned - The Spiderwick Chronicles and the Chronicles of Prydain. I must, must check them out, online.
