My Son's mp3

My son won his school's Math-a-thon by collecting the most money for the math work he completed and, in doing so, was awarded an mp3 player. Now, we have the most noteworthy responsibility of downloading a batch of 30 decent, "mainly" kid-friendly songs. [He has requested U2's Vertigo and a couple of Bill Mallonees -- that's my boy -- but for the most part that's not what I'm looking for].

I'm asking for requests for songs that a seven-year-old (who likes more grown-up music, probably, than most seven-year-olds) might enjoy. Here's a few that I've come up with or that they've played at his school, and this should give you an idea of what song types I'm hunting:

Hound Dog, Jailhouse Rock, and Blue Suede Shoes (Elvis)
Rockin' Robin (who knows?)
Build Me Up, Buttercup (The Foundations)
When Bull-frogs Croak (Zak Morgan)
Joy to the World (Jeremiah Was a Bullfrog) (Three Dog Night)

On the other hand, he's specifically requested NO Father Abraham, London Bridge, Mary Had a Little Lamb type stuff.

That's sort of where I'm going. That said:

Suggestions?

How about:

Mr. Sandman - ???
Blue Moon - ???
Big Yellow Taxi - Joni Mitchell
Down On The Corner - CCR
Puff The Magic Dragon - PP&M
City Of New Orleans - Arlo Guthrie
ABC-123 - Jackson Five
Sir Duke - Stevie Wonder
The Twist - Chubby Checker
You Can Call Me Al - Paul Simon
Walking On Sunshine - Katrina and The Waves
I Run - Flock Of Segauls (I'm joking)

Here a few other abstacts:

I'll Fly Away - Sung by Allison Krauss and Emylou Harris on the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack.

There is a CD called 'Roar' that my daughter loves. It is a combination of praise/worship and hymns modernized and sung by kids. She plays it all of the time.

She also loves all of the Laurie Berkner songs. She has a CD too.

My daughter also loves:

ColdPlay, Boston, Chrish Tomlin, Selah, The Cranberries, The Cardigans, Sixpence None The Richer, Micahel W. Smith, and The Dixie Chicks (ugggh!).

Anyway these are just some thoughts.

Walking on Sunshine

YES!!! Awesome, Doug.

Also,

The Twist
Puff the Magic Dragon
Down on the Corner
and
ABC 123

are definitely worth consideration (as are they all).

Thanks, Doug!!!

Oh, and Doug,

Not sure if I thanked you for the link to the Altar Boys CD that I ended up purchasing. I've been enjoying that.

It may be a little hard, but I might find a way to slip an Altar Boys tune into the mix as well for the betterment of my child. Most of it's too street level, but There Is a Love or Life Begins at the Cross or even Human Sound might be straightforward enough for him. I mean, he needs some culture, don'tcha think?

Rich,

I got my CD too. It is great to hear those old tunes. I also found a double-CD of Mike Stand's two offering. I didn't write to you about it because I figured you'd already spent enough loot.

I'm glad it blesses you too.

I really loved that music in college (still do), but it really is showing its age. The music may be a little dated, but the words are still pretty great.

I think I'd put Where's The New World, or I'm Not Talking About... (whatever the name of that song was) if I were gonna put tracks from their CD on it.

We always used to like (and my kids still do) some of the old funny songs like:

-Purple people eater
-Ray Stevens' The Streak, Ahab the Arab, Harry the Hairy Ape, and others
-Yellow Submarine

Newer fun ones include:
-Several of the Disney songs from movies
-Many sports-related songs (We Will Rock You, Who Let the Dogs Out, We are the Champions, Na Na Na, Hey Hey Goodbye, etc)
-Old TV theme songs are good, too

Other generation-crossing songs might be:
-Funkytown, Lipps Inc.
-Who can it be now?, Men at Work
-Somebody's Watching Me, Rockwell
-Ghostbusters, Ray Parker, Jr
-Shout, Isley Brothers
-Rapper's Delight
-Oops, Upside Your Head, Gap Band
-Centerfield, John Fogerty
-Sweet Home Alabama, Lynyrd
-These Boots are Made for Walking, Nancy Sinatra
-I Feel Good, James Brown

Lastly, how 'bout:
-The Proclaimers
-The Newsboys

I am really backward as far as songs are concerned. Don't think I know any of the above except Ghosbuster! :D Hmm .. unless I hear them.

Anyway, I just bought a new CD (which is rare) - Celtic Woman and my son fell in love with Orinocco Flow. Know it? :)

Meaghan,

Isn't that an Enya song?... she is celtic.

Enya!

Yeah, we had an Enya cassette tape a few years back that my wife bought. I like Enya's music. There's not much out there that's like it.
